FG Commence NIN Registration For Diplomats

The Federal Government has commenced National Identity Number enrolment of foreign diplomats in Nigeria.

The National Identity Management Commission in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Kayode Adegoke on Friday said that the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, had directed the creation of an enrolment centre for diplomats at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

As contained in the statement, the directive was in a bid to ensure seamless enrolment of all diplomats across the country for the purpose of the ongoing NIN-SIM linkage and other needs.

It read, “The NIMC wishes to assure members of the general public that all hands are on deck to ensure the enrolment of all Nigerians and legal residents into the National Identity Database.

“The enrollment of the diplomats started on Monday, 18th January 2021.”

Recall, the Federal Government had said that the NIN registration was mandatory for diplomats residing in Nigeria, as well as for all other lawful residents across the country.

It stated that the enrolment centre for diplomats would provide support for members of the diplomatic corps and would be managed by the communications ministry through NIMC.

There had been calls for a deadline extension on NIN-SIM linkage due to the large crowd that gather daily at the various offices of NIMC, as many telephone subscribers had yet to get their NINs.

This follows the extension of the deadline for the registration of NIN by Nigerians, as the Federal Government had earlier fixed December 30, 2020 as deadline.
