The Federal Government has said that it has nothing to do with the arrest of Premium Times publisher, Dapo Olorunyomi.

In a statement by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, the government reiterated its undertaking not to interfere with the freedom of the press in Nigeria, adding that it is essential for the success of democracy.

Recall that heavily armed police men had late last week stormed the Premium Times office, arresting its publisher and one of the newspaper’s reporter, Ms. Evelyn Okakwu.

Mr. Mohammed said the arrest was a private matter involving a citizen and the Premium Times, therefore it should not be attributed to the Federal Government in any way.

”We have said it before and we want to re-state it: The Federal Government has no immediate or long-term plan to stifle press freedom,” he assured Nigerians.

“Even the Social Media, with its warts and all, will neither be regulated nor have its operations tampered with.
