Google Launches Africa’s First Developer Space In Nigeria

American tech giant Google LLC. has launched its first Developer Space in Africa with Nigeria being its favourite destination to launch the tech project.

The launch which took place Wednesday will enhance Nigeria’s digital Economy Strategy as the move is in line with Google’s pledge in 2017 to invest in Nigeria’s tech potential to speed up growth in the continent’s tech space.

The hub located in Ikoyi, Lagos state, will provides the African tech community with access to Google’s resources, programs, tech and business mentors which will in turn foster collaboration within the local industry and Africa. 

Recall in 2017, Google Chief Executive Officer, Sundar Pichai, made a commitment to African entrepreneurs In July 2017, to start the Launchpad Accelerator Africa program.

The Country Director, Google, Nigeria, Juliet Ehimuan, in her speech said that the centre will provide the needed resources for African tech to grow with ease as the tech giant has put all the necessary facilities in place for its operations, adding  that the project will provide thousands of jobs in the continent.

Similarly, The Head of Operations, Launchpad Accelerator Africa, Onajite Emerhor said that the move was in fulfilment of googles promise of providing opportunities to build a network that will allow further access to growth opportunities in the industry.

According to Emerhor: “The space is custom-built for a myriad of activities which include general workspace area, Hackathons, Code Labs, and Bootcamp.”

The Managing Director/CEO, Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT), Abimbola Alale, who represented the Minister for Communication & Digital Economy expressed delight over the development as he said that the project will not just support entrepreneurs, but will  benefit the ministry since the Developer Space captures two aspects of the Digital Economy Strategy of the Ministry.
