Governors Forum Writes Buhari To Approve Interstate Lockdown Over Coronavirus

The Nigeria Governors Forum has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to include requests from the forum in his next presidential pronouncement on the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The forum, in a letter dated 24th April and signed by its Chairman and Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, asked the president to incorporate into his next presidential intervention, recommendations agreed upon during its teleconference meeting on Wednesday, 22 April.

The forum requests : “interstate lockdown excluding movement of essential supplies (foods, beverages, medical and phamacauticals, petroleum supplies and agricultural products. “

It also wants the president to consider approving “internal free movements but with restrictions on large gatherings and assemblies, overnight curfews, lockdown of flights and the compulsory use of face masks/coverings in the public. “

The unanimous decision of the 36 governors followed the spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the last few days, which currently stands at over 1000 confirmed cases in the country.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had extended the initial two-week lockdown declared on March 30 by additional two weeks, which will come to an end next week.
