Gueye Fires Senegal Into Nations Cup Quarterfinals

Pape Gueye scored a brace to lead Senegal to a 3-1 win over Sudan to qualify for the quarterfinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.

Aamir Abdallah gave Sudan a schock lead after six minutes from a sublime finish after a stunning counter attacking move.

Saido Mane provided an assist for Gueye before the half hour mark to make it 1-1.

He added the second goal before the end of the first half to give Senegal a deserved 2-1 lead.

Substitute Ibrahim Mbaye scored a thunderbolt effort to seal the win for the Teranga Lions.

Mbaye became the youngest goalscorer in Senegal’s AFCON history at the age of 17 years and 344 days.

He is also the youngest goalscorer in the competition since Shiva N’Zigou, who scored for Gabon against South Africa on 23 January 2000 (16y, 91d).

Former Liverpool star Saido Mane praised his side for sealing a comeback win over Sudan.

He said: “We played good game from the beginning against Sudan but the goal we conceded came as shock and felt like punishment. Still, we managed to react well and score the equaliser.

“After that, our response was positive and we eventually scored three goal. That’s football the game was not easy at all. Every match at the Africa Cup of Nations is difficult but in the end we managed to secure qualification to the quarter finals.”

Mane has now recorded 18 goal contributions at Nations Cup tournaments since 2006, making him the most productive player in the competition over that period.
