Having Multiple Sex Partners Can Affect Your Pregnancy

Having multiple sexual partners is not unusual for most young people. But a medical doctor has advised couples against infidelity, warning it can cause Sexually Transmitted Infections(STI) and push the woman to having an Ectopic Pregnancy.

Ectopic pregnancy, according to a Gynaecolopgist, Dr. Oby David, is the implantation of a fertilized egg in a location outside the uterine cavity, including the fallopian tubes.

In more than 90% of cases, the egg implants in a fallopian tube but multiple factors can contribute to fertilized egg to grow somewhere else in the woman’s belly, causing life-threatening bleeding .

Dr. David, in a chat with THE WHISTLER, pointed out that a woman is more likely to have an ectopic pregnancy if any of the following conditions occur:

Smoking : A risk factor in about one third of ectopic pregnancies; smoking may contribute to decreased tubal motility by damage to the ciliated cells in the fallopian tubes.

Altered tubal motility:

As mentioned, this can result from smoking, but it can also occur as the result of hormonal contraception; progesterone-only contraception and progesterone intrauterine devices (IUDs) have been associated with an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy.

History of 2 or more years of infertility(whether treated or not):

Women using assisted reproduction seem to have a double risk of ectopic pregnancy although this is mostly due to the underlying infertility.

History of multiple sexual partners:

This pre-exposes the female to STI. With this, he advised correct and consistent condom use, and being faithful to one partner.

According to the doctor, the baby growth outside the womb introduces a risk of rupture as the pregnancy advances.

“If it ruptures, it becomes an emergency and the lady can bleed to death. But at the early stages of development, the body can get rid of the developing fetus and limits the progress of the pregnancy.”

He stated that there is also an option of some medications which have been carefully prescribed by an obstetrician , to be taken to get rid of the fetus before it gets to the stage of rupture.

“if there is rupture with evidence of hemodynamic instability, then an emergency surgery is done to save the life of the mother because the baby may not even make it to 4 months before the rupture.”

if a rupture occures, the doctor explained that at least 3 bags of blood will be needed to save the mother, adding that most times they die before even arriving the hospital.
