Head Of Bolivian Senate Declares Self President

The President of the Bolivian Chamber of Senators, Jeanine Anez, has declared herself the new president of Bolivia by citing a constitutional clause before lawmakers in Congress.

This was disclosed Wednesday by the Upper Chamber via a tweet at @SenadoBolivia.

The tweet reads: “By constitutional succession, the senator @JeanineAnez assumes as the new president of #Bolivia.”

According to Anez, the constitution empowered her to be the new leader of the country after the resignation of Morales and his vice on Sunday.

“Before the definitive absence of the president and vice president, and as the president of the Chamber of Senators, I immediately assume the presidency as foreseen in the constitutional order,” she said.

However, the declaration was made in the absence of other lawmakers from Morales’ leftist party; they boycotted the parliamentary session on Tuesday because, according to them, the meeting would be unlawful.

But in a swift reaction, Morales, who is currently in Mexico has termed the declaration as a coup, vowing to fight back politically.

He fled to Mexico after the Organization of American States (OAS) declared that there were serious flaws during the October 20 election.
