Health Workers Shut Down Abuja Isolation Centre Over Unpaid Allowances

A coronavirus (COVID-19) isolation centre in the Asokoro area of Abuja has been shut down by health workers protesting non-payment of their hazard allowances.

A patient who recently recovered from COVID-19 at the isolation center in Asokoro General Hospital, Seyi Adeola, told THE WHISTLER that she was the last patient the health workers attended to before downing their tools.

Adeola, who is an Abuja-based media consultant, said some of the health workers who attended to her revealed that they had not been paid their allowances since April despite treating over 500 patients without any fatality.

“I was the last patient that was admitted to this isolation centre at Asokoro hospital and the last patient to be discharged as the Centre closes down today because the government of FCT hasn’t paid the frontline workers since April when the centre was opened. I also learnt that no death was recorded. Kudos to the team for doing a wonderful job,” she said.

Adeola, who was full of praise for the health workers, regretted that they had to be owed their hazard allowances even though “they have not seen their families since April”.

She also thanked God for sparing her life after contracting the dread Coronavirus: “I am on my knees in praise of the Most High and in gratitude to Him the Creator of Heaven and Earth. I am so grateful to the Lord that He has done this for me. He saved my family, friends and loved ones from devastating sorrow, and to rejoice all my life. Thanks so much for the calls, prayers and the supports.”

Adeola said her journey to the Asokoro isolation centre started with symptoms of Malaria which turned out to be Covid-19.
