History Made As Plateau United Win First NPFL Title

Plateau United are the 2016/17 champions of the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL.

Kennedy Boboye’s men defeated last season’s champions Enugu Rangers 2-0 at the Rwang Pam Stadium, Jos, to win their maiden league title and bring to an end a thrilling climax to the NPFL season.

They become the 19th champions of the NPFL and were presented a N50 million cheque by the League Management.

The Jos based side went into the game just one point above Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries FC, on 63 points, though with a better goal difference.

Boboye’s side needed a win to ensure they claim their first league title and not worry about the outcome of the game between MFM and El Kanemi Warriors.

The Olukoya Boys however lost 2-1 at Maiduguri.

Nonetheless, both teams will represent Nigeria in next year’s Caf Champions League.

One interesting fact is that both teams were relegation battlers last season – with Fidelis Ilechukwu’s men needing a result against FC Ifeanyi Ubah on the last day at the Agege Stadium to avoid the drop.
