Hit-And-Run Driver Kills Pedestrian, Arrested By Military In Anambra

A yet-to-be identified pedestrian was killed on the Boxing Day by a hit-and-run driver after Ihiala Local Government Headquarters in Anambra State.

The accident, which occurred around 5:30pm, was caused by loss of control by the driver as a result of over-speeding. The driver was later arrested through the combined efforts of the operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra State Command, in collaboration with men of the Nigerian Army.

The name of the driver was given as Chika Emmanuel Nwagu, driving an IVECO truck with registration number EPE 39 XT.

An eye witness, Moses Eze, told THE WHISTLER in Awka that, “The crash involved a total of three male adults. The driver of the IVECO truck was later arrested and handed over to the police after a timely tip-off to the military by the FRSC rescue team from Ihiala command. The knocked down pedestrian was rushed to Our Lady’s of Lourdes Hospital, and was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. The body was deposited at the mortuary.”

The sector commander of the FRSC, Anambra State Command, Andrew A. Kumapayi, while condoling with the bereaved family, admonished motorists to avoid over-speeding in built-up areas. He stated that the maximum speed limit in an urban area is 50km/hr, and advised persons on foot to make use of pedestrian bridges to avoid road mishaps.
