Hot Dog, Other Processed Meat Linked To Mental Illness – Report

I guess the debate between those who swear by the nutritional benefits of processed meats and others who are quick to point out their “side effects” on humans would finally come to an end, thanks to scientists.

The researchers from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD recently revealed in a study that the Consumption of processed meat like the hot dog, ham, bacon and many others may possibly be the cause of mania in human.

According to the PsychCentral, manic episode is defined as a “mood state characterized by period of at least one week where an elevated, expansive, or unusually irritable mood exists.

Symptoms of mania can include hyperactivity, irritability, insomnia or difficulty sleeping, or excess energy.

However, to prove this Dr Yolken in collaboration with Dr Seva Khambadkone and Kellie Tamashiro conducted a series of tests on patients receiving care for manic symptoms.
The results showed the patients were over three times more likely to have ever eaten processed meat products (nitrate-cured meats) than patients being treated for other psychiatric conditions.

The study has also linked the presence of nitrates in processed meat to several neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer.
