House Of Reps Members Get Cash In Place Of Peugeot 508 Cars

The House of Representatives has commenced offering between N11 million and N12.5 million to members who couldn’t get the Peugeot 508 official cars for which it budgeted N17 million for each unit.

It would be recalled that the House had allocated N6.1 billion in its 2016 and 2017 budgets for purchase of the official vehicles.

But according to Premium Times, the House resorted to offering money to the lawmakers following failure by Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria to complete the delivery of 360 units of the cars.

The automobile company was reported to have supplied only 200 units of the cars which prompted the new development.

“Due to frustration, some of the lawmakers have collected the cash and purchased other vehicles of their choice,” a source told Premium Times.

The Newspaper quoted another unnamed source as saying his boss “was offered N12.5 million but he refused and insisted on the 508. How can you be offered such amount of money for a vehicle that is worth more than that?” he claimed.

The WHISTLER recalls that Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Abdulrazak Namdas, had said the House deserved to be commended for not demanding official cars yearly.

Namdas said this in defense of the N6.1 billion budgeted for cars by the House at a period of recession in which the country has found itself.

“Let me tell you that it is only in the National Assembly that vehicles are purchased every four years. In all other agencies of government, they buy vehicles every year. I think we should be commended,” he had said.
