How Buhari Reacted To Failed Military Coup In Gabon

President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to a failed attempt by the military in Gabon to seize power in the Central African country on Monday.

President Ali Bongo had hours after five junior military officers announced that they had seized power from his government, stated that the situation had been brought under control.

Reacting to the development on Tuesday, President Buhari, through his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said the military officers should know that the era of coups were over as “democracy is supreme”.

“The military officers in Gabon should understand that the era of military coups and governments in Africa and indeed worldwide, is long gone.

“Democracy is supreme and the constitutional stipulations on the peaceful change of administration must be respected.

“That is the only way we can ensure peace and stability not only within the country but also in the region.”

President Buhari, who doubles as Chairman of ECOWAS, urged the military officers to resign and run for elective offices if they were interested in politics.
