How Toothache, High Blood Pressure Stopped Onnoghen From Trial

A tooth ache and high blood pressure of 410/121 were the excuses given on behalf of Justice Walter Onnoghen for his non-appearance at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) on Tuesday for continuation of his trial.

Onnoghen, who is facing six counts of non-declaration of assets, had been suspended as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) by President Muhammadu Buhari to allow for seamless trial of the charges levelled against him.

The suspended CJN was scheduled to appear before the CCT today for the trial, but his lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), told the tribunal that his client was receiving treatment for a severe tooth ache.

Awomola presented a medical report to the CCT that showed that Onnoghen was also receiving treatment for high blood pressure.

The prosecuting counsel, Mr. Aliyu Umar (SAN), acknowledged that he had been given a photocopy of the medical report and acknowledged that the defendant had a medical challenge that would require him to be placed on bed rest for 72 hours.

Following the prosecution’s acknowledgment of the medical report, the CCT adjourned the case till March 18.

“In view of the medical report presented by the defendant and the fact that the request was conceded by the prosecution, the tribunal hereby adjourns matter till Monday, March 15 as requested by the prosecution,” said Mr Umar.
