Ibadan Chief Imam Defies Sultan, Leads Eid Prayer Today

The Chief Imam of Ibadan, Sheikh AbdulGaniyu Abubakry Agbotomokekere, on Wednesday ( today) led hundreds of Muslims in Eid prayer at the Ibadan Central Eid Praying Ground, Agodi.

This was contrary to the directive given by the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar that fasting should continue on Wednesday.

The Sultan, who is the President-General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs had said Eid-Fitri would be performed on Thursday due to non- sighting of the moon on Tuesday night

The imam of Ibadan, it was gathered, had on Tuesday announced that Ramadan had ended and that he would lead the Muslim to perform Eid prayer on Wednesday.

Although many prominent Muslims in Ibadan were not present, it was gathered that the Deputy Governor, Rauf Olaniyan and the National Vice- Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in the South West, Taofeeq Arapaja among other dignitaries, attended the prayer.

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday and Thursday as public holidays to enable Muslim celebrate the end of Ramadan.
