IGP Accused Of ‘Treason’ Over Continued Detention Of Samuel Ogundipe

The Advocacy for Integrity and Economic Development (AIED) has accused the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, of “treason” over the arrest and detention of a reporter with Premium Times, Mr Samuel Ogundipe.

The AIED said it was allegedly treasonable of IGP Idris to “undermine” and “ridicule” the office of Acting President Yemi Osinbajo by continuing to detain the reporter at a time that the VP had just called for the overhaul of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit due to its alleged abuse of human rights.

Ogundipe was last week taken into custody by the police for obtaining and using the Police IG’s report on the sacked DSS DG, Mr Lawal Daura, for a news story.

In the report, IGP Idris submitted his findings and recommendations on the sacked DSS DG to the Presidency.

Speaking on the matter, AIED said said in a statement on Thursday by its Director of Media and Publicity, Comrade O’Seun John: “We were shocked to receive news of the unlawful detention of Samuel Ogundipe, one of the finest investigative reporter in Nigeria who has only dedicated his time to revealing the truth at all times.

“We find it incomprehensible that this illegality took place at a time the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo – a senior minister in the temple of justice – is making efforts (to) reform the scattered structure of the Nigeria Police Force.

“This act in itself is nothing other than treason as it undermines the office of the Acting President and brings ridicule to the Presidency.

“We believe strongly in the face of glaring evidences of gross abuse against human rights and total disregard for the tenets of law that the Inspector General of Police has outlived his usefulness in office and his appointment should be terminated without delay,” said the organisation.
