Imo Gov’t To Allocate New Owerri Market Stalls To Previous Owners

The Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, has promised former shop owners at Eke Ukwu Owerri that his administration will give back the reconstructed shops to them when the work is done.

The Commissioner for Commerce, Simon Ebegbulem, made the promise while on an inspection tour of the market.

The Eke Ukwu Owerri market was demolished by the Rochas Okorocha administration.

Simon said the project was 40 percent complete and at least 200 Owerri natives and original shop owners would be given price concession.

“For instance, if a shop would go for N2 million or N3 million, they may be asked to pay less as a way to compensate them for the loss they suffered,” Mr Ebegbulem said.

He said that on completion, the state government would collaborate with the market association to ensure that traders who lost their shops in the demolished market were given priority during the allocation of stalls.

Also, the state’s commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, said the governor’s decision to rebuild the facility was because its only ancestral market in Owerri.
