Imo Speaker Faces Impeachment Over 2019 Guber Ambition

Speaker of the Imo state House of Assembly, Acho Ihim, may be on the verge of impeachment following his alleged ambition to succeed Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha.

Ihim’s impeachment is reportedly in the pipeline as lawmakers in the State House of Assembly have vowed to remove him if he fails to honourably resign.

According to a report by Daily Sun, members in the House had accused the Speaker of reducing himself to the level of an ordinary aide to the governor in a bid to succeed him in 2019.

The lawmakers further accused him of trampling on the legislative arm of the state government by denying the lawmakers the allowances due to them.

“We have never had it so bad in this state where legislators have lost so much respect among the populace because of the ambition of the speaker who has turned himself as an aide of the governor,” one of the lawmakers who pleaded anonymity said in Owerri.

“Because of his ambition to become governor in 2019, he is undermining the powers of the legislature to the extent that allowances due to members of the House are not paid to them.

“We have, therefore, resolved to ask the speaker to resign honourably or we will be forced to remove him in accordance with the constitution for incompetence.”

Ihim’s spokesman, Ben Ilochuonwu, however denied any plot to impeach the speaker, adding that his boss never had plan to succeed Okorocha in 2019.
