Sixty years after Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule, some citizens of the most populous nation in Africa took to the streets in protest instead of celebrating the milestone.
Different groups from different sections of the country held protests in parts of the country and overseas on October 1, 2020.
They include members and supporters of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who observed the group’s sit-at-home order in Aba and Onitsha.

Some Yoruba separatists agitating for Oduduwa Republic and members of #RevolutionNow movement protesting alleged anti-people policies of the government, also held protests in parts of the country.
The reasons for the protests bordered largely on alleged marginalization, insecurity and bad government policies.
There had been apprehension that the protests could result in breakdown of law and order, prompting the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to order a 24-hour surveillance by the police across the nation. At least 30 RevolutionNow protesters were said to have been arrested during the protests in Lagos.
