INEC: Lauretta Onochie Disowns APC, Buhari Group During Senate Screening [VIDEO]

President Muhammadu Buhari’s special assistant on social media, Lauretta Onochie, has disowned her party, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), during her screening as one of the national commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Onochie, during her screening by the Senate committee on INEC on Thursday, said never thought “I would be here today defending my nomination to INEC. I never ever envisaged it, but here I am.”

THE WHISTLER had reported that President Buhari’s nomination of Onochie as INEC national commissioner had sparked outrage from opposition political parties and civil society organisations.

This website reported on October 13, 2020, that the president nominated Onochie, amongst five others, to represent Delta State.

The leadership of the main opposition Peoples Democratic party (PDP) had last week Wednesday led a protest to the National Assembly over the Senate’s insistence on screening the president’s aide for the position.

Earlier, the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room had rejected Onochie’s nomination and described her as “a known partisan supporter of Buhari”.

While noting that provisions in the 1999 Constitution forbids a partisan politician as a member of INEC, the group had stressed that it was important that “the composition of INEC is transparently non-partisan and independent of partisan political manipulation.”
