‘Injured’ Novak Djokovic To Miss U.S Open

Novak Djokovic, Serbian professional tennis player, is set to miss the U.S Open due to elbow injury.

The 30-year-old has been struggling with a long-term elbow problem, which forced him to retire in the quarter finals at Wimbledon.

He retired at a set-and-a-break down to Tomas Berdych in the last-eight at the All England Club and cited a longstanding elbow issue as the reason for pulling out – something he has been struggling with for nearly 18 months.

His doctor, Zdeslav Milinkovic, told Serbian newspaper Sportski Zurnal that Djokovic has a bone bruise from “excessive play” that requires between a month-and-a-half to three months of rest.

According to the doctor, the “symptoms are declining,” but Djokovic will need rehab on his elbow and still wants to avoid surgery.

“He did not have enough of a pause, Novak clenched his teeth and continued playing despite a serious injury. It was always a big concern for me as his friend,” Milinkovic said.

“In the next examination, we’re going to know whether this assessment stays or if it will be changed.

“During that time he will not have a training session with the racquet, but he will be able to do other segments of practice connected with the condition and similar things. Of course, he will have to undergo certain therapies.”

The 30-year old Serb is ranked as the current world number 4 Men’s Tennis player by the Association of Tennis Professionals’ (ATP) 2017 rankings.

Till date, Djokovic has won 68 ATP singles titles, including 12 Grand Slam singles titles, five year-ending championships and a record thirty ATP Masters Series 1000 titles. He was also a bronze medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Following the development, the Serb looks likely to miss a Grand Slam for the first time since the Australian Open in 2005.
