Instagram Introduces Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication is a form of security that’s significantly stronger than a basic password as it requires a unique code to be sent to a specific device before a login is allowed. It provides an extra layer of protection against accounts being hacked.

Users can check if two-factor authentication is available on their device by going into the app’s settings. An option for Two-Factor Authentication should appear under the Account menu, and enabling the setting to “require security code”.

Once enabled, the app will text a six-digit code to users’ phones every time they want to log in to the service.

WhatsApp introduced a similar method of account security in February called two-step verification.

The Facebook-owned company also announced a new policy that will blur out “sensitive content” and help promote “a safe environment” for all app users.

“Soon you may notice a screen over sensitive photos and videos when you scroll through your feed or visit a profile,” the Instagram team wrote on their blog.
