IPOB Celebrates As Protesting Women Regain Freedom

The 112 women remanded at the Owerri prison were released on Friday, just as members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) hailed them as ‘heroines.’

Last week, 127 women staged a peaceful protest in the Imo state capital demanding for the whereabouts of the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, who went missing since last year when the Nigerian military stormed his parents’ home in Umuahia, Abia state.

The protest was forceful dispersed and 115 of them arrested with one allegedly killed in the process.

They were arraigned before a magistrate court sitting in Owerri, presided over by S.K Durumba, last Monday on an eight count charge.

In some of the eight count charge No: Ow/430c/2018, the police alleged “That you conspired with others now at large to commit misdemeanor to wit conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 517 of the criminal code.

“Did belong to a proscribed organization to with indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 2 (3) (i) of the terrorism (prevention) act, 2011 as applicable in Imo state.

“Conspired with others now at large to commit a felony to wit treasonable felony and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 516 of the criminal code Act, Cap. C38, Laws of the federation of Nigeria, 2004 as applicable in Imo state.

“That you and others now at large did in a public place, conduct yourselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by unlawfully obstructing the flow of traffic and other business and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 249 (d) of the criminal code act, Cap. C38, Laws of the federation of Nigeria, 2004 as applicable in Imo state.”

Announcing the release on his Twitter page, Dr. Sam Amadi, a lawyer and governorship aspirant in Imo state said; “It is done. Our mothers and sisters are free. #freedomforOwerriWomen.

“IPOB members are rejoicing and boasting. Is it one step to their nirvana. They are praising Nnamdi Kalu as a savior. Whatever Victory for justice #FreeOwerri112”
