IPOB Not A Terrorist Organisation – S/East Lawmakers

The South East Caucus in the National Assembly has kicked against the proscribing of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist group by the Defence Headquarters, while urging the embattled organization to suspend its activities.

The Caucus after a meeting on Wednesday at the National Assembly in Abuja said the branding has grave implications for “innocent citizens from the area who may be affected by the consequences.”

In a six-point communique signed by Senator Enyinna Abaribe, Chairman, Senate South East Caucus, and Hon. Chukwu Onyema, Chairman, House of Reps South East Caucus, the lawmakers said “this branding we believe will foreclose any possible dialogue that will bring about a peaceful end to the activities of such group.”

It further called on the federal government to “look into the problems that feed the never ending agitation by youths of the South East and other geopolitical zones in this country.

“That we condemn the use of hate speeches and remarks by anybody as the dignity of human persons must be respected at all times, even when dissenting on any issue.”

The Caucus said it “affirm our support for unity of Nigeria anchored on justice, equality and fair treatment of all parts of Nigeria.”
