IPOB Plans To Shut Down South East If Nnamdi Kanu Is Not Brought To Court

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has threatened to lock down the South East for one month if its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is not produced in court next month.

The Federal Government in June re-arrested Kanu to face charges bordering on treasonable felony brought against him.

Kanu is expected to appear in court on October 21 following an adjournment by Justice Binta Nyako, presiding Judge of the Federal High Court, Abuja, after the government failed to produce him in court on July 26.

Kanu has since been in the custody of the Department of State Services(DSS).

Spokesperson of IPOB, Emma Powerful, in a statement on Wednesday, said the group was aware of a plot not to bring him to court on the adjourned date.

He alleged that the government planned to keep him behind bars and demoralise the agitation for Biafra.

Powerful said IPOB will lock down the South East for one month if Kanu is not produced in court for resumption of his trial.

The statement said, “Our peaceful disposition as a people should not be misconstrued as weakness.

“Nigeria cannot incarcerate our leader illegally and expect things to be normal again.

“If by October 21, Kanu is not brought to court, Nigeria will know that Kanu commands the unflinching loyalty of over 60 million Biafrans home and in diaspora.

“By keeping our leader out of circulation, his health will be in jeopardy and we won’t allow this.”

IPOB had in July announced a sit-at-home on every Monday of the week to
protest Kanu’s detention.

IPOB later rescinded the decision, but some of its overzealous members have continued to enforce it despite complaints that it’s crippling economic activities in the region.

The separatist group said last week that such enforcers would face sanctions if caught.
