IPPIS: Reactions As ASUU Again Threatens Strike Action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said that it will shut down academic activities across tertiary institutions in the nation if the federal government fails to withdraw its directive on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

In a recent tweet from the union at @ASUUNGR, it threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if the federal government stops the salaries of their members over IPPIS.

The presidency had said that the IPPIS was vital in its fight against corruption, adding that it complied with global best practice.

“The IPPIS scheme is one of the Federal Government’s reform initiatives which is designed to achieve among others: a centralized payroll system of the Federal Government, to facilitate easy storage, updating and retrieval of personal record for administrative and Pensions processing to aid manpower planning and budgeting as well as to comply with the global best practice.”

But the ASUU national president, Biodun Ogunyemi said after a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, that the Union shall activate its standing resolution of “No pay, No Work.”

He added that the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation should tell Nigerians where IPPIS is extended to universities as one of the best practices.

Meanwhile, Nigerians on twitter have reacted to the issue, calling on ASUU to comply with government’s directive as well as avoiding a shutdown of academic activities as that would compound the problem of Nigerian students.
