Popular streamer Darren Watkins Jr., widely known as ‘IShowSpeed’ caused a stir in Accra after an unusual stunt during his visit to Ghana drew widespread reactions both on the ground and online.
At Independence Square, the 21-year-old content creator stunned fans when he backflipped into a massive pot of Ghanaian jollof rice as part of activities on his ongoing Africa tour.
Videos from the scene quickly circulated online, initially showing shock among onlookers before the moment turned into laughter and viral amusement.
However, clips that later emerged showing locals scooping and packaging rice from the same pot sparked heated debates online, with opinions sharply divided. While some dismissed the act as harmless fun, others criticised it as disrespectful and unhygienic.
A Ghanaian social media user, identified as Denilo, condemned the incident, saying: “For the 100th time, this isn’t funny. People are starving and you’re here laughing at this, chasing impressions.”

Another Ghanaian user, David, described the stunt as unhealthy, noting that the streamer landed in the jollof fully clothed. “He landed in the jollof with his shirt and shorts soaked in sweat and dust. The shoes he wore throughout the day smashed the face of the jollof with utter disrespect,” he wrote.
In contrast, several users defended the moment, reflecting a more carefree attitude toward the incident. Zoey commented: “No be joke, food is food! Backflip or not, rice no get enemy in Ghana. Zero waste, full respect.”
Similarly, Candiv wrote: “Africans just want to eat and survive. As long as the food won’t kill them. There’s an adage that says dirty no dey kill African man.”
Denzel wrote The power of influence is what you shouldn’t joke about.
Same jollof on the street with a random person no one goes near.lol
Crowns said, “You can’t blame them. Some people don’t have food to eat.”

Despite the concerns raised online, there were no reports of illness linked to the incident.
After the stunt, IShowSpeed was also seen tasting the jollof rice. While praising the experience, he reportedly declared Nigeria’s version of the dish superior, reigniting the long-standing but friendly rivalry between Ghanaian and Nigerian jollof lovers.
Fans have since described the episode as another example of the chaotic but vibrant cultural exchanges that have characterised the streamer’s Africa tour, further cementing his reputation for turning spontaneous antics into global talking points
