Carlo Tavecchio, President of Italian football federation (FIGC) resigned on Monday, days after the national team failed to reach the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.
Referees association president Marcello Nicchi told reporters that Tavecchio had quit during a meeting at FIGC headquarters in Rome, AGI news agency reported.
The 74-year-old has been under pressure to step down following 1-0 aggregate play-off defeat to Sweden last Monday which saw Gli Azzurri miss the World Cup for the first time in 60 years.

Speaking to reporters immediately after Monday’s meeting, Tavecchio said he wanted to “apologise to all Italians”, adding, “Now’s the time for Italian football to embark on a new era.”
He continued, “I resigned as president and I asked the whole of the board to do the same. They didn’t.
“My target now is to manage the FIGC for the next 90 days before the elections.”
Recall that Coach Gian Piero Ventura was sacked last Wednesday.
