‘I’ve Problem With Men Holding The Door For Women’ – Chimamanda

Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has disclosed that she “ has trouble” with men holding the door opened for women in the name of chivalry.

She said this on Wednesday during her interview on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.

“Holding the door shouldn’t be gender, I think it’s a lovely thing to hold the door but we should hold the door for everyone. I hold the door for men and women,’’ she said.

“I think the idea of holding the door for women, because she is a woman, I have trouble with it. I am quite happy for people to open the door for me but I hope they are not doing it because of this idea of chivalry.

“Chivalry is really about the idea that women are somehow weak and need protecting but we know that really, there are many women who are stronger than men.

“So, really, what I think is that the people we should protect are people who need protecting; whether men or women.”

She further expressed her grievance on the idea of people always saying women and children should be rescued first in times of tragedy rather saving the weak and unwell.

“Which is also why I have issues with women and children when women are classified…when there is a tragedy and we say women and children should live first. I think actually it is the people who are weak and unwell who should leave first,” she said.

The renowned feminist, Adichie recently questioned 2016 presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, for beginning her Twitter bio with “Wife, mom, grandma,” while her husband’s account does not begin with “husband”.
