Julius Berger Introduces Innovative Solution To Road Construction In Nigeria

The Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Engr. Wolfgang Goetsch, has pledged the company’s increasing commitment to deliver highest quality solutions for Nigeria’s future infrastructural needs.

Goetsch who spoke on Tuesday at the official flagging-off ceremony for the Rehabilitation of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano dual carriageway project in Kano, stated that within the context of technological methodology procured and deployed for the execution of the works, the project is a pioneer development, considering that for the complete rehabilitation of the carriageway, Julius Berger has introduced cold recycling methodology, a highly innovative, value-driven solution, never before used in Nigeria for road works.

The efficient and environmentally friendly solution results in complete rehabilitation by way of recycling the milled-off pavement to produce a bitumen stabilized material, which is then utilized for paving the base course layer of the road.

The novel technological solution ensures that the new road will have an increased load-bearing capacity, compared to the previous pavement constructed with granular base course, leading to an extended lifespan.

Goetsch happily enthused that “this can be achieved with a shorter construction period”.

The benefit is that for the duration of the project works, construction traffic is greatly reduced compared to conventional methods, meaning fewer heavy load bearing trucks on the road, reducing road congestion and diminishing the burden on the livelihood of the surrounding communities.

He further explained said the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano dual carriageway is not an ordinary road, but a high priority infrastructure of national significance.

The road, he said, “forms a critical part of one of Nigeria’s most important highways, the A2, which is a main artery within the country’s transportation grid, enabling the movement of people and products from the North to the South and vice versa; uniting the Nigerian people, promoting commerce and boosting the economy”.

Speaking of the strategic continental function, usefulness and relevance of the important project, Goetsch said “the Abuja-Kano dual carriageway is also a key connection to the trans-African highway, linking Nigeria to the larger continent of Africa, further driving opportunity for trade and strengthening the country’s economic footing.”

While also thanking the host communities for the expected cordial relations with the company, Goetsch assured “will continue to work efficiently and implement the highest standards of Health, Safety and Environmental processes, to minimize any disturbances arising from construction activities in the course of executing the project”.
