JUST-IN: Edo Speaker, Francis Okiye Impeached

The Edo State House of Assembly, on Monday, impeached its Speaker, Francis Okiye.

Okiye was impeached following a motion by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Henry Okhurobo, over allegation of high-handedness.

Nine out of the 10 members of the House, who were present at the sitting, signed the impeachment letter.

The member representing Esan West State Constituency, Marcus Onobun was thereafter elected as the new speaker by the house.

Recall that the deputy speaker of the House, Yekini Idiaye, was in August, impeached.

Okiye had said then that Idiaye was impeached over allegation that he planned with the leaders of the All Progressives Congress and the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, “to illegally and violently take over” the assembly.

The deputy speaker was impeached and immediately replaced with the member representing Orhionmwon II Constituency, Roland Asoro.
