The OIC is made of up about 50 countries like Saudi Arabia, Pakistan (which are Islamic Countries); as well as Nigeria which became its member since 1986.

According to its mandate, the OIC models the collective voice of muslims as well as protects the interest of the Muslim world.

In Nigeria, there is freedom of religion and Section 10 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution states that “The Government of the Federation or of a State shall not adopt any religion as State Religion.”

On the reason for the meeting, the OIC stated that Saudi Arabia called for it so that members could proffer solution to the rift between Palestine and Israel.

“Upon the request of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, chair of the Islamic Summit, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will on Sunday 16 May 2021 hold a virtual open-ended meeting of its Executive Committee at the level of foreign ministers to discuss the Israeli aggression in the Palestinian territory, particularly Al-Quds Al-Shareef, and its acts of violence in the vicinity of Al-Aqsa mosque,” the OIC stated on its website.

Recall that even the United Nations had noted the escalation going on in the area, and had called for calm.

But the attacks continued till Sunday as Israel reportedly targeted the residence of a leader of the Hamas organization in Gaza, Palestine.

The Israel Defense Force and Hamas have exchanged rocket attacks since Monday after a clash happened between Palestinian worshippers and Israel’s security operatives at a Temple Mount in Jerusalem.
