JUST IN: Police To Announce SARS Replacement As Presidency Orders IGP To Fill ‘Policing Gaps’

A new police squad may be underway as the Presidency has directed the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to make arrangements to fill the “policing gap” that would arise from the immediate disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

IGP Adamu had on Sunday announced the dissolution of SARS following mass protests by citizens against alleged extra-judicial killings, extortion, amongst others, by the defunct squad.

The police chief had hinted about the possibility of a new squad emerging from the disbandment of SARS on Sunday.

Adamu had noted that there was, “the ever present need to combat armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes in the country which was before now the core mandate of the erstwhile Squad (SARS” adding that, “a new policing arrangement to address anticipated policing gaps the dissolution of SARS would cause has been evolved and shall be announced in due course.”

The Presidency, in a subsequent statement on Sunday, noted that President Muhammadu Buhari had issued a “presidential directive”, which indicates that the Force may announced a new squad to replace SARS.

The statement posted on Twitter reads: “PRESIDENTIAL DIRECTIVE: The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force has been dissolved WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT.
