Kaduna: El-Rufai Receives Knocks, Accolades Over Demolition Of ‘Sex Party’ Venue

Mixed reactions have trailed the demolition of the supposed venue of a planned “sex party” in Kaduna State by the Governor Nasir El-Rufai-led government.

The Kaduna State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KASUPDA) had confirmed the demolition of Asher Hotel located in Barnawa, Kaduna South Local Government Area, on Thursday over the planned sex party.

The agency said, “Asher Hotel was the proposed venue for the Kaduna Sex Party, the hotel was also caught contravening the Covid-19 guidelines of the state,” adding that it “will not hesitate to demolish properties used for such immoral act.”

Governor El-Rufai also shared a tweet that appeared to justify the state government’s action.

The governor said, “Focus!! 2021 is the critical year to deliver on our “Putting People First” commitments. We will deal decisively & clinically with anyone, within or outside the public service, whose ambition, ego, mischief or bigotry stands in the way of achieving this.”

But reacting via the micro-blogging platform on Thursday night, the publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu, condemned the state government’s move.

Momodu tweeted: “I oppose the unilateral demolition. The hotel is a business and instead should have been prevented, closed down temporarily or penalised heavily if the organisers went ahead… More Nigerians have now been thrown into sudden unemployment on New Year’s Eve!”

Inibehe Effiong, a Lagos-based lawyer and human rights activist, also slammed the Kaduna State government over the demolition, describing it as “thuggish and erratic action.”

Effiong tweeted, “This is a stupid and lawless act by KASUPDA or whatever it is called. This is a thuggish and erratic action.

“Demolishing the property is unconscionable and illegal. Will they demolish Kaduna Government House if immorality is committed there? Which court authorized this madness?”
