Kano LG Lures Children With Sweets To Immunise 75, 061

In spite of recent certification of Nigeria as Polio free by the World Health Organisation, Dambata Local Government Area of Kano State has continued to immunised children against the disease.

It has so far immunised over 75,061 children to checkmate any re-occurrence of polio disease in the area.

However, immunisation officials had to motivate children to come out immunisation by providing sweets,sachet milk, detergents and other simple items.

The Local Immunisation Official (LIO) of the council,Alhaji Najib Yusuf
,while speaking with THE WHISTLER said, the strategy assisted the council to get the children out for immunisation and surpass the initial target of 74,508 projected to be immunised .

His words: “Aside from this,the role played by district and ward heads ,community leaders ,who always addressed residents of the local government council areas and informed them of the consequences of not getting their children immunused ,made parents to bring out their children for immunisation with ease .”

He said as a border community close to Katsina state ,the LG immunisation officials always make sure to immunused children who accompanied their parents to markets to avert spread of polio to other parts of the state

According to him, immunisation officials also visit football fields in the evenings and immunise young children who play football, while mosques ,churches and schools are also visited, thus enabling many children to be immunused .

He stressed that lot of sensitization programmes were carried out before the commencement of immunisation
exercise, adding that a combination of all of the above measures enabled the council to record huge success.

He also acknowledged the provision of adequate vaccines and logistics by the council management.

According to Yusuf, ” we thank Allah ,there was no issue of non-compliance, through out the period of four days immunisation exercise, while few children that were absent were equally immunised during the MOP exercise.”
