KANO POLL: You’re Free To Run, Appeal Court Clears PDP’s Candidate Abba Yusuf

All is now set for the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, to run in tomorrow’s governorship poll in Kano State,

This comes as the Court of Appeal presided over by Justice Daniel Kalio has set aside an earlier High Court ruling and cleared him to participate in the election.

The appellate court granted all the prayers put forward by the appellant, and granted a stay of execution of the order of a high court which barred the PDP from recognizing Mr Yusuf as its candidate.

The Federal High Court had nullified Yusuf’s candidature on the grounds that his party did not conduct a proper primary election, after one of the party’s governorship aspirants, Alhaji Ibrahim Ali-Amin, challenged the legitimacy of the process.

A short statement late Thursday by Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sanusi Dawakintofa, said the Court of Appeal restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from removing the Yusuf’s and other PDP candidates names from the list of Kano State contestants in the 2019 contest.

According to him, the party had sought a stay of execution on the previous judgement passed by a Federal High Court in Kano on the validity of the party’s October 2 primaries.

Reacting to the Appeal Court ruling, Yusuf said, “As I always mention, the case mainly concerns our party and an aggrieved member who is working with the ruling All Progressive Party (APC) in the state to remedy the fast growing unpopularity of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.”
