KIDNAPPING: Osun Monarch Supports Death Penalty For Offenders

Kidnappers in Osun State may soon find it tough in their nefarious activities if the call by the Olowo of Iwo land, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi was implemented.

Oba Akanbi called for death penalty for kidnappers as a way to put an end to kidnapping in the state.

The monarch made the call during a courtesy visit by the traditional rulers of Iwo land to Governor Gboyega Oyetola in Osogbo on Thursday.

Their visit was to congratulate the governor on his recent victory as the duly elected State Chief Executive in the September 2018 guber polls as upheld by the Supreme Court.

While noting that issue of kidnapping in the state had become worrisome, Akanbi said it demanded a harsh penalty for anyone involved in the act.

“We traditional rulers want to beg the governor on behalf of other royal fathers to strictly enforce a harsh penalty for kidnappers when apprehended.

“If possible it should be death penalty instead of life imprisonment as the case may be,” Akanbi said.

The traditional ruler is not the first public figure to be recommending capital punishment for kidnappers in the country.

Recall that Senator, Abdulfatai Buhari (APC-Oyo North), on June 23 recommended capital punishment for kidnapping and other forms of violent crimes in order to tackle growing insecurity in the country.

Mr Buhari told journalists in Ibadan that the spate of kidnapping and killings across the country would continue unabated if such a drastic measure was not taken.
