Killing Of 250 Terrorists: Nigerians Demand Proof, Question Police Integrity

Skepticism has greeted a claim by the Nigeria police that men of its “tactical forces” killed no fewer than 250 members of the “Ansaru terrorist group” during a raid on their hideout at Kuduru Forest, Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State, on Wednesday.

The police had said in a statement that the raid was jointly carried out by the special operatives of Operation Puff Adder and the special forces of the Police Airwing.

The statement which was signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, said “The operation was necessitated by actionable intelligence linking terror and criminal elements in the super camp to series of terror-related violence, kidnappings, gun-running, cattle rustling and other heinous crimes across the country.”

“Unfortunately, during the operation, a Police Bell helicopter, which provided aerial and intelligence cover for the ground troops came under attack from the bandits using sophisticated anti-aircraft rifles and GPMG.

Mba added, however, that the police operatives demonstrated “uncommon courage and expertise” by successfully landing the aircraft at the Air Force Base in Kaduna without further incident.

But reacting via Facebook and Twitter on Thursday, some Nigerians questioned the integrity of the police by demanding proof that the said 250 terrorists were killed during the raid.

Reacting also, the immediate past senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, suggested that the police should endeavor to “invite the media and show them the ‘250 bandits casualties’ and those you captured during your operations,” adding that “for most people nowadays, seeing is believing.”
