An online report had similarly suggested that Aisha Ahmad, a Deputy Governor in the bank may be appointed as his replacement.

But a top management source in the CBN told THE WHISTLER that the story was fake news, and that he is still the governor of CBN.

“It is fake news please ignore the story. There is no basis for the alleged report of forced removal. He may or may not be reappointed at the end of his tenure in June, which is normal. But to say he was removed, there’s no basis for that report,” the source stated.

Emefiele was appointed governor of the CBN on June 3, 2014 by then President Goodluck Jonathan. He came from the private sector and as a high-flying Group Managing Director of the Zenith Bank PLC.

He became CBN governor at a time the economy had started weakening and showing signs of recession.

But analysts believe he had delivered on his promise to run a central bank that spends its energies on building a resilient financial system that serve the growth and development needs of the country.

The CBN under him has also encouraged diversification of the economy and stimulated growth in the agriculture sector in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s plan with innovative agric credit plans.

His first tenure is expected to end in June this year.
