Lagos Govt Gives IrokoTV 7 Days To pay 5% Levy On All Contents

Lagos State government has asked IrokoTV to pay five per cent levy on all of its contents produced in the state.

This was contained in a letter sent to IrokoTV, seen by THE WHISTLER.

IrokoTV is a Lagos based web platform that provides paid-for Nigerian films on demand.

The company, worth over $25m is one of the continent’s first mainstream online movie streaming website which gives access to over 5,000 Nollywood films.

The state government said, “We hereby request for Immediate payment of the five per cent levy on all audio and visual contents produced, sold, distributed, marketed, exhibited, streamed, downloaded and shared across all physical and digital platform situate. lying and being within Lagos State.

“You have been served notice as a necessary procedure and you are obliged to comply within Seven days from the due of receipt of this notification.”

The state government attached a Direct Debit Mandate Form to the notice, while mandating the company to fill the attached form.

“Whilst thanking you for your cooperation In this regard, please accept the assurance of our highest consideration and esteem,” the letter added.

Responding to the notice the Chief Executive Officer, IROKOTV , Jason Njoku said, ” I wonder if Netflix Nigeria, Film house Cinema and YouTube got one of these.”

Nigeria’s entertainment industry was among the most hit by the pandemic as as the entertainment sector has witnessed sharp decline.
