Lagos Train Accident Occurred Same Day We Planned To Shut Gates Into Area – Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has regretted that the train accident reported in Oshodi on Monday, occurred on the same day the state government reached an agreement to shut the gates allowing cars into the area.

Sanwo-Olu stated this hours after visiting the scene of the accident involving a moving train and three vehicles.

The governor visited the scene in company with the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, amongst others.

Sanwo-Olu said, ” It is regrettable that this happened on the day stakeholders reached a consensus to close the gates into the arena.

“This is one of the concerns we have raised about commuters’ safety around the area. This accident should strengthen our resolve to prevent a reccurrence.

“This is also a clarion call on our people to be safety conscious whenever they need to drive across the rail track.

“If there is slow movement of vehicles at any railway bypass, we must keep a safe distance from the rail tracks. We have rolled out advocacy on this and we will continue to intensify efforts. The safety of the people is paramount,” the governor said in a tweet on Monday night.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) had earlier said that amongst the vehicles involved in the accident were an SUV and a Volkswagen.

“A third vehicle, a highlander JEEP was also involved in the collision and its passengers (2 adult males) sustained serious injuries before being transported to Hospital.

“One has since lost his life while the other is undergoing treatment,” the agency tweeted.
