LAUTECH Cancels Planned Exams As ASUU Insists On Strike

The  Ladoke Akintola University of Technology has cancelled the planned examinations and resumption of academic activities in the school.

The Registrar of the university, Dr Kayode Ogunleye, had announced the resumption of academic activities in a memo written to students and staff of the institution.

But the Academic Staff Union of Universities in the university promptly reacted to the memo and vowed not to conduct any examination or be involved in academic activities until the national strike was suspended.

Following the position of the ASUU, the university issued another memo cancelling the planned resumption earlier announced.

The Deputy Registrar, V.S Ayoade, in a memo on Wednesday asked students to disregard the earlier memo issued to announce resumption and examinations.

The deputy registrar said the earlier memo was sent in error and it should be discountenance.

The internal memo with reference number R/AA/COP&D/28 and dated December 9 read, “The earlier ammended academic calendar was inadvertently sent in error. Kindly disregard.”

The university had earlier announced December 9, 2020 for  the resumption of 100 level students while Harmattan Semester examination is expected to commence for 100 level students on Monday December 14, 2020 and end on December 23, 2020.

The university also announced in the memo that the Rain Semester for all students would begin on January 4, 2021.

But the Chairman of ASUU in the university, Dr Biodun Olaniran, said in a statement that the union was part of the ongoing indefinite national strike and would not do anything to sabotage that.

Olaniran urged parents and guardians whose children and wards were running programmes in the university not to allow them to travel down for the examination which he said would not be conducted.

“Our Union is in receipt of 2019/2020 amended academic calendar released by the Vice Chancellor through the office of the Registrar. The Academic Staff Union of Universities LAUTECH branch wishes to dissociate itself from the said memo.

“This is against the principles of our union and we wish to inform the general public that our branch is actively participating and also in full support of the ongoing national struggle. We therefore urge parents and students to note that our members are not in position to conduct any academic activities including the conduct of examinations.”
