Lekki Shooting: Fresh Outrage As CNN Investigation ‘Exposes’ Nigerian Army

A fresh outrage has been fueled by revelations contained in a new CNN investigative report on the shooting incident at the Lekki toll gate on October 20, 2020.

The report released on Wednesday contradicted some of the claims made by the Nigerian Army on what transpired at the Lekki toll gate, where an undetermined number of #EndSARS protesters were allegedly killed.

Contrary to the army’s claim that its soldiers did not shoot live bullets at unarmed protesters, CNN said several footages and satellite images analyzed by its reporters showed men in military uniforms shooting in the direction of protesters at the popular toll gate in Lagos.

The media outlet also spoke to gunshot survivors and families of persons said to have been shot at the Lekki toll gate.

It spoke to one Elisha Sunday Ibanga whose brother was reportedly killed during the shooting incident. The report showed graphic photo of the deceased identified as Victor Sunday Ibanga.

His family told CNN that they were yet to find his dead body: “My mother, my sisters, all my family are in prayer, just to see if we can find out and know where my brother’s dead body is,” said Victor’s brother.

The medium said it authenticated a photo showing Victor’s body lying in a pool of blood and wrapped in Nigerian flag at the scene of the shooting.

Families of protesters who went missing after the shooting incident also spoke to CNN.

One Peace Okon said her brother, Wisdom Okon, has been missing since he went to the protest on the night of the shooting.

“He just came back from work on that Tuesday, ate his food and went there,” Okon told CNN.

“I’ve gone to hospitals, I’ve gone to police stations, I’ve gone to everywhere. I can’t find him,” she said.

According to the report, bullet shells obtained from the scene of the shooting incident were verified by current and former Nigerian military officials to be those being currently used by the army. The report said exports documents showed that the bullets were purchased from Serbia by the Nigerian government.

However, THE WHISTLER could not independently verify the claims made in the report.
