Low Gas Supply: DisCos May Engage In Load Shedding

The Management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) on Tuesday said customers in its area of operation would experience load shedding due to the current acute gas shortage in the country.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had disclosed a reduction in the quantum of power transmitted to the 16 Generation companies in the country following low supply of gas.

To manage the situation, AEDC in a public notice said it resorted to load shedding to be able to service its customers.

It stated that as a result inadequate generation, load shedding to its customers in the FCT and other states in the company’s franchise area have become inevitable.

“We assure our customers that as the situation improves, we will pick more load and service more of our customers,” the notice read.

This development may be an indication that other DisCos may adopt same strategy to serve their customers.

Load shedding is the deliberate shutdown of power to parts of the electricity network to reduce a predetermined volume of electricity used to maintain system stability and the supply-demand balance.
