Makinde Inaugurates Panel Of Enquiry On Police Brutality, 50 Petitions Received

Oyo State Governor, Mr Seyi Makinde, has inaugurated an 11-man Judicial Panel of inquiry to investigate human rights violations, police brutality and extra judicial killings in the state.

The panel is in line with directive from the Federal Government that such be instituted to make recommendations on compensations to be paid to victims.

This was arrived at following the #EndSARS protests which rocked the country in October.

The panel comprises Hon. Justice Badejoko  Adeniji (chairman), Prof. J. O Akintayo, Mrs. W. F Odutayo, N. O Sulaiman, Ms. M. Y Kolawole, Hon. Babs Oduyoye, Mrs. M Badmus, Ms. O Akintayo, Falowo Saheed, Agbeja Adebobolab, Mrs. O. O Ogundele (Secretary)

Makinde, who inaugurated the panel on Tuesday at the Executive Council Chambers of the Governor’s Office, said the state government took time to engage people of impeccable characters  as members of the panel.

The governor explained that over 50 petitions had been received and implored other residents who had issues of human rights violations, police brutality and extra judicial killings to come before the panel to seek redress.

 Makinde said the killing of Isiaka Jimoh, Ganiyu Moshood and policemen, amongst others, during the #ENDSARS protests would be thoroughly investigated and perpetrators would be brought to justice.

The governor stated that South-West governors, at a meeting held in Lagos on Sunday, did not support the clampdown on social media but agreed that the current Cyber Crime Act be invoked to deal with issues in that regard.

 Makinde hinted that government at all levels needed to build the trust of the people and truly address hunger and deprivation in the land.

He charged the panel to be objective and ensure fairness, justice and equity.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof Oyelowo Oyewo, assured the people of the state that the panel would make quality recommendations and ensure justice is done.
