Mali Crisis: Opposition Group Says Coup An Endorsement Of Struggles For Better Country

Mali’s opposition group, M5-RFP, has claimed that the military coup that toppled President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and the prime minister, reflected the will of Malians.

President of Strategic Committee of M5-RFP, Choguel Maiga, made this known to Radio France Internationale (RFI) on Thursday.

“What happened in Mali is not a classic coup; it is the culmination of the struggle of the Malian people that the armed security forces have completed, and in the most beautiful way,” he said.

Furthermore, he accused the now ousted leaders of holding on to power by all means.

“We want a profound change, a fundamental change in the organisation of Malian society.

“That never again someone takes power and believes that he has the right of life and death on the people,” he said.

Recall that the Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) had recommended a government of national unity as part of its mediation efforts to restore peace in Mali.

But, the M5-RFP had earlier rejected ECOWAS’ resolutions.

“The M5-RFP notes, with regret, that the conclusions of the Summit of Heads of State do not take into account the depth and gravity of the socio-political crisis which is mortgaging the future of Mali, do not correspond at all to expectations and aspirations of the Malian people and above all violate the laws and the Constitution of Mali that the Movement respects,” they had stressed in a statement.

However, ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations Security Council had unanimously condemned the actions of the mutineers, who led the act on Tuesday.

ECOWAS had also taken stiff measures against the country even as the Heads of State are currently having a virtual meeting on Mali, regarding the next line of action.

The Mutinying soldiers had also said they would allow civil groups to conduct fresh elections.
