A man in Cross River State has been sentenced to 22 years imprisonment without the option of fine for raping his 14-year-old daughter.
Emmanuel Udo, aged 47, reportedly raped his teenage girl at their home in Calabar, Premiumtimes which quoted the CrossRiverWatch.
A Family Court presided over by the acting Chief Judge of the state, Eyo Ita, gave the judgement on Tuesday.
According to reports, the suspect’s arrest followed a petition filed by a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Basic Rights Counsel Initiatives, after his (Udo) wife had reported the matter to them.
Speaking to Premium Times on Tuesday, an official of the NGO, James Ibor, commended the mother of the teenager for her courage to report the crime to relevant authorities.
“I want to also commend the attorney-general and commissioner for justice, and the members of his office, for the way he conducted the prosecution…
“…I want to commend my staff for providing psychosocial support to the child throughout the period of the proceedings.”
He also mentioned that the survivor was satisfied with the outcome of the judgement, saying, “the society also has that satisfaction that justice has been done, perpetrators or would-be perpetrators would be deterred by that judgement”.
