He was then arrested and later arraigned on a charge bordering on violence against a person vested with public authority.

Tarel told the court that he acted the way he did because he was displeased with Macron’s leadership style, adding that it has negatively affected the country.

“When I saw his friendly, lying look, I felt disgust, and I had a violent reaction.

“It was an impulsive reaction… I was surprised myself by the violence.

“I think that Emmanuel Macron represents the decline of our country,” he claimed.

The Independent UK reported that aside the four month sentencing, he got “an additional 14-month suspended sentence, and also banned from ever holding public office and from owning weapons for five years.”

Reacting to the incident, Macron said the man who slapped him was stupid.

“Nothing justifies violence in a democratic society, never.

“It’s not such a big deal to get a slap when you go toward a crowd to say hello to some people who were waiting for a long time.

“We must not make that stupid and violent act more important than it is,” he told newsmen.
