Man In Court For Stealing N3.6m Alcoholic Drinks

A storekeeper, Olayinka Arowosola, is standing trail before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ibadan for allegedly stealing 2000 crates of alcoholic and other beverages worth N3.6m.

The prosecutor, Supo Busuyi, presented the suspect and witnesses before Chief Magistrate Olaide Hamzat, during the. Resumed hearing on Thursday.

During the cross examination, the owner of the company from where Arowosola allegedly stole the drinks told the court that the accused person was employed by the company in 2018.

He told the court that the manager of the company, Nurudeen Salawu, called him that some goods were missing and that he carried out some investigation and found out that the accused person and others stole the missing drinks.

He said, “Yinka sold, Trophy and Goldberg beer, Maltina pet, Orijin bitters pet which amounted to almost N3.6m.

“The manager told me that one of Mr Yinka’s partners came forward to confess that he had been involved in helping him to sell the stolen items.

“I wrote a petition to the police and he was arrested. His conspirators pleaded and confessed . He wanted the case to be resolved amicably. Olayinka also pleaded and confessed.”

He added that four staffers, Arowosola Olayinka, Adeyemi Babatunde, Sunday Fadipe, Rasheed Folarin were arrested out of the 16 members of staff of that branch.

Speaking further he said “Adeyemi Babatunde pleaded that I should show him mercy and he agreed to pay his own part of the share in which he has been paying back with his salary.

“When we took stock of the items stolen, it then came up to N3.6million. Babatunde said he sold goods worth N1.2million and Olayinka only gave him 10 per cent of it.

“Sunday said his share was N56,000, Rasheed confessed that his share was N120,000.

“A customer Gbenga Emmanuel, also known as Opaleti was Olayinka’s major buyer within that period. He has a truck who goes to our warehouse and Olayinka had acces to load any goods he wants. He was giving 100 crates per time to Opaleti.”

Chief Magistrate Olaide Hamzat adjourned the case till December 1, 2021 for further hearing.
