Marcelo Calls In Lawyers Over ‘Tax Fraud’ Claims

Real Madrid and Brazilian defender Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior, known as Marcelo has become the latest player to be targeted by tax authorities in Spain.

Spanish prosecutors had on Tuesday accused the 29-year-old left-back of tax fraud totaling €490,000 (£436,000; $576,000) according to BBC Sports.

The alleged irregularities are linked to the use of foreign firms to handle the earnings of his image rights, Madrid’s public prosecutor said.

In reaction to the tax fraud claims, Marcelo said his lawyers are looking into issue and hoped the matter will be resolved swiftly.

“My lawyers are looking into the matter,” he explained in his post match interview after Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham.

“I hope they will find a resolution and that the matter will be sorted as soon as possible.”

The Brazilian star is now the latest in a string of footballers to be pursued by the Spanish tax authorities.

Recall that last year Barcelona star Lionel Messi and his father were found guilty on three fronts of defrauding tax authorities of 4.1 million euros from income made from image rights.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Javier Mascherano and Ricardo Carvalho are among other players who have been also investigated.

Manchester United manager José Mourinho was also accused of irregularities while he was Real Madrid coach from 2011 to 2012, which he denied.
